Title: Mission vs Margin: Is there really a choice?
St Vincents & Mater Health Sydney (SV&MHS) is part of the national Sisters of Charity Health Service, which is Australia’s largest non-government, not-for-profit health care provider. Collectively, the SV&MHS Group provides a comprehensive range of acute and sub acute health and aged care services from primary prevention through to tertiary level care across community, outpatient and inpatient settings. The work in health and aged care is supported by a significant investment in teaching and research in partnership with Universities and affiliated research institutes. Committed to excellence, the health and aged care facilities of SV&MHS are recognised both nationally and internationally as leading health care providers. SV&MHS is a large and complex organization, employing around 7000 staff with an annual turn-over of around $600 million.
SV&MHS facilities are also committed to a strong tradition of compassionate response to community need. Our values are based on Christian gospel teachings. These values – compassion, justice, human dignity, excellence, unity, mercy, hospitality and respect – give form to our activities and drive our vision to remain a leading health care organisation operating in both the public and private sectors.
In this Café presentation, Mark Hales will discuss a range of issues including:
§ the Mission as a Healing Ministry;how they continue to maintain a Mission driven and values based culture within their organization;
. how they maintain the human face of compassionate care, in an environment driven by financial performance, shorter lengths of stay (in hospital) and a scientific model of medical interventions and rapid clinical response; and
§ how, in spite of their unique complexity of operating both in the public and private sectors, they remain faithful to the founding mission.
